AQA GCSE English Language (8700)
Recent grade boundaries, what each grade looks like in practice, and how to push your marks into the next band.
Grade boundaries change every year based on the difficulty of the papers and the performance of the whole cohort. The boundaries below are from recent exam series and are provided as a guide only. Your actual grade boundary may be slightly higher or lower. Always check the AQA website for the most up-to-date boundaries after results day.
The total number of marks across both papers is 160 (80 per paper). Your raw marks from both papers are combined to produce your overall grade. Below are the boundaries AQA published for the most recent series we have transcribed:
| Grade | June 2024 raw mark (out of 160) | Approx. % |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | 121 | ~76% |
| 8 | 111 | ~69% |
| 7 | 102 | ~64% |
| 6 | 92 | ~58% |
| 5 | 82 | ~51% |
| 4 | 73 | ~46% |

AQA GCSE English Language (8700) / Literature (8702). Figures are the board's published June 2024 raw subject-level boundaries, transcribed on 2026-05-17 from the official source. Subject-level (overall qualification) raw boundaries out of 160, normalised to percentage. English Language 8700 curve used as the board default; Literature 8702 figures recorded in AQA_8702_LITERATURE_RAW.
Check these against the board before you rely on them. We transcribed them from the official PDF linked above and a second person has not yet checked the transcription. Boundaries also change every series, so the only figure that governs your result is the one the board publishes for your own series.
