Build paragraphs, introductions, and conclusions that hit every AQA mark
AQA literature essays follow a clear extract-to-wider-text pattern. You are expected to weave AO1 (response), AO2 (language and structure) and AO3 (context) throughout, with SPaG (AO4) explicitly marked on Shakespeare and the modern text.
What markers look for
AQA marker checklist
These are the structural moves that pay back the most marks on AQA essays.
Open with a thesis that takes a clear position on the question.
On extract-based questions, make your first body paragraph anchored in the extract.
Always have at least one body paragraph that draws from the wider text.
Embed AO3 context inside your analysis paragraphs - never as a stand-alone opener.
On Lit P2 modern text, weave in Priestley/Stevenson/etc. authorial intent.
Headline essay: Lit P2 anthology poetry comparison (30 marks)
Compare methods inside every paragraph. Use the printed poem as your anchor and pull in your second poem with a clear comparative connective. AO3 context for both poets is expected.
