Poetry Comparison Essay Plans

Ten model essay plans covering the Conflict and Time & Place collections. Each plan gives you a thesis, three comparative paragraphs with point-evidence-analysis for both poems, and an exam tip.

In Paper 2, Section B you will be given a named poem, printed on the paper, and asked to compare it with one of your own choice from the same collection. These plans practise exactly that skill. Adapt each plan to whatever poem the exam names - the comparative frameworks transfer.

How to use these plans

Read the thesis first — it tells you the argument the whole essay will make. Every paragraph should link back to it.
Practise the comparison sentences — the green “Compare” boxes show you how to link the two poems within a single paragraph.
Swap in your own poem — if the exam names a different poem, keep the same comparative framework and replace one side of the comparison.
Time yourself — aim for 35–40 minutes on the comparison question. These plans are designed to be writable in that time.
