A Passage to Africa

by George Alagiah (1955-2023)

George Alagiah (1955-2023) was a Sri Lankan-born British BBC journalist and broadcaster. In this memoir extract, Alagiah recalled reporting on famine in Somalia and the moment one man's apologetic smile forced him to question how journalism turns suffering into spectacle.
