EAL · Grammar
When to use a/an, when to use the, and when to use nothing. This is the single biggest grammar gap for Arabic speakers - Arabic has no indefinite article and uses ال differently from English the.
English uses three article forms: a, an, and the. "A" (or "an" before a vowel sound) is the indefinite article - it introduces something for the first time, or refers to one of many. "The" is the definite article - it points to a specific thing already known. Many singular countable nouns NEED an article - you cannot say "I bought book" in English the way you might say "اشتريت كتاب" in Arabic. The rule: every singular countable noun in English needs either a, an, the, or another determiner (this, my, one). Plural and uncountable nouns can stand alone when general ("Books are important") but take "the" when specific ("The books on the table are mine").
I bought a book yesterday.
