Lesson Overview
This 60-minute Year 11 session prepares Cambridge IGCSE 0500 (First Language English) and 0990 candidates for unseen poetry comparison. The class moves from a tight starter on structural shifts, through a five-pass reading routine, to a worked Grade 9 paragraph. The aim is procedural: by the end of the lesson, students should be able to repeat the routine on any unseen pair without prompting.
Starter (10 minutes): Mark the Shifts
Display two short public-domain poems side by side — choose canonical pre-1900 poems from your school anthology (Wordsworth, Dickinson, Rossetti, Hardy, and Frost are all reliable candidates). Do not analyse yet. Students read both silently and mark, with a single vertical pencil line, every point at which they sense a structural shift — a change in voice, tense, image, or address.
When pairs compare their pencil lines, the most common pattern emerges: structural shifts cluster at stanza breaks, but the most interesting shifts hide mid-stanza. This primes attention to volta-like turns even outside the sonnet form.
Main (40 minutes): Five-Pass Routine, Anchor Points, and a Modelled Paragraph
Five-pass reading (20 minutes). Apply the routine to both starter poems. Each pass takes two to three minutes per poem and answers a single question.
- Form. What is the form, and does it conform or break? Quatrains? Free verse? Sonnet?
- Voice. Who is speaking, to whom, and from what distance?
- Image. What is the dominant image cluster? What is the poem's "central object of attention"?
- Structure. How does the poem move from start to end — is it linear, circular, fragmented?
- Shift. Where does the poem turn, and what does the turn cost the speaker?
Students annotate in two colours, one per poem, so the comparative texture is visible at a glance.
Build comparison — two anchor points (10 minutes). From the annotations, students identify two anchor points that hold the pair together. An anchor point is a comparative hinge — a feature both poems engage with, but treat differently. Voice and structural shift make reliable anchors; theme alone does not. Pairs share their anchor points and justify them in one sentence.
Worked Grade 9 paragraph (10 minutes). Project a pre-prepared Grade 9 paragraph on the board. Annotate live: a precise comparative thesis as the topic sentence, an embedded quotation from each poem, zoomed analysis of one word per quotation, a structural observation that pivots between the two, and a final sentence that earns its conceptual weight without overreaching. Students do not write their own paragraph yet — they annotate the model. This stops them from rushing to drafting before they have seen what high quality looks like.
Plenary (10 minutes): Comparative Thesis Exit Ticket
Students write a single-sentence comparative thesis on the starter pair, naming both anchor points and signalling an argument. Collect on exit. Strong theses do three things: name both poems, name both anchors, and stake a claim that the rest of an essay could defend.
Differentiation
Foundation learners receive a form-spotting checklist — a one-pager with named forms (sonnet, ballad, dramatic monologue, free verse, blank verse) and one identifying feature per form. Higher learners receive a meter analysis extension — scansion exercises on iambic pentameter and trochaic substitution, with a prompt to identify metrical disruption at the volta of a sonnet.
