Walton sets out for the Pole

Letters 1-3: Walton sets out for the Pole. Letter 4: The stranger on the ice. With the ship closed in by ice, the crew see a gigantic figure drive a dog-sledge north. Next morning they take aboard a second traveller, his limbs nearly frozen, from a sledge on a drifting fragment of ice. He soon asks which way the first went, and in time decides to tell Walton his story. "You seek for knowledge and wisdom, as I once did" Victor tells his life as a cautionary tale, so everything that follows is offered to Walton, and to the reader, as a lesson.
Chapters 1-3: A Geneva childhood and a fatal subject. Victor grows up in a loving Genevese family with Elizabeth Lavenza, taken in as a child, and his friend Henry Clerval. At thirteen he discovers Cornelius Agrippa, whom his father dismisses without explaining why. His mother dies of scarlet fever caught nursing Elizabeth, and at seventeen he leaves for the university of Ingolstadt, where a lecture by M. Waldman fires his ambition. "Natural philosophy is the genius that has regulated my fate" Victor traces his ruin to these years, and a reader can weigh how far he blames chance, his father and destiny rather than himself.
Chapter 4: The secret toil. Victor discovers, he says, the cause of life, and resolves to build a human being about eight feet tall. He works alone for months, collecting bones from charnel-houses and materials from the dissecting room and slaughter-house, blind to the summer and to the friends and family whom he knows his silence is worrying. "Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge" The chapter shows the cost of ambition before the experiment succeeds: Victor sacrifices every human tie to it.
Chapter 5: The creation, and the flight. On a dreary November night the Creature opens a dull yellow eye. Victor, horrified by what he has made, runs from the room, then wakes to find the Creature at his bedside, one hand stretched out, and flees again. Next morning Henry Clerval arrives, and Victor collapses into a nervous fever that lasts for months. "breathless horror and disgust filled my heart" The novel's turning point: every later death follows from Victor's refusal, here, to care for the being he has made.
Chapters 6-8: William's murder and Justine's trial. A letter tells Victor that his youngest brother, William, has been found dead with the mark of a murderer's finger on his neck. Returning to Geneva, Victor glimpses the Creature in a storm and knows the truth, but says nothing. Justine Moritz, a servant the family loves, is accused when the portrait of Victor's mother is found in her pocket. She is condemned at her trial and executed, having confessed falsely under pressure from her confessor. "I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was" An innocent woman dies for the Creature's crime and Victor's silence, and her words about being called a monster anticipate the Creature's whole story.
Chapters 9-10: The meeting on the glacier. Sunk in grief and guilt, Victor escapes to the Alps and climbs to Montanvert above the sea of ice. The Creature bounds towards him across the glacier. Victor curses him, but the Creature, calm and eloquent, asks to be heard before he is judged, and leads him to a hut on the mountain to tell his tale. "I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel" The Creature speaks for the first time, and his reasoning voice overturns everything Victor has told us about him.
Chapters 11-14: Learning to be human. The Creature describes his first confused sensations in the forest near Ingolstadt, finding a fire left by beggars, and being driven from a village with stones. Hiding in a hovel against a cottage, he watches the De Laceys, blind old De Lacey, Felix and Agatha, gathers firewood for them at night, and learns to speak and read as Felix teaches the newly arrived Safie. "Was I then a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled, and whom all men disowned?" At the centre of the novel the Creature's education shows him gentle and generous, which makes the rejection to come a test of the reader as much as of him.
Chapter 15: Three books and a rejection. The Creature finds Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives and the Sorrows of Werter, and reads Victor's journal of his making, found “in the pocket of the dress which I had taken from your laboratory”. He reveals himself to the blind De Lacey, who treats him kindly, until Felix, Safie and Agatha come in and Felix beats him away with a stick. "Hateful day when I received life!" The hope of acceptance is raised as high as it goes and then destroyed, and the Creature now knows exactly who made him and how.
Chapter 16: War on humankind. The De Laceys abandon the cottage and the Creature burns it. On his way to Geneva he saves a young girl from a river and is shot by a countryman, probably the companion she had been running from in play. Near Geneva he meets William, kills him on learning that he is a Frankenstein, and places the portrait in the dress of Justine, asleep in a barn. "Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?" The Creature crosses into violence, and the novel asks the reader to hold his suffering and his guilt in view at the same time.
Chapter 17: The demand for a companion. Repeating the demand that closes Chapter 16, the Creature insists that Victor make him a female companion, promising that the two of them will go to the vast wilds of South America and never be seen again. Victor refuses in anger, is slowly moved by the argument, and at last consents. "If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear" Victor accepts a creator's duty for the first time, and the rest of the novel turns on whether he keeps his word.
Chapters 18-20: The second creation destroyed. After months of delay Victor travels through England and Scotland with Clerval, then works alone on one of the remotest of the Orkneys. Fearing that the female might reject her mate, or that the pair might have children, he tears her to pieces as the Creature watches at the window. The Creature swears revenge, and Victor sinks the remains at sea. "I shall be with you on your wedding-night" Victor's refusal is arguably both his most responsible act and his most destructive one, which is why it divides readers.
Chapter 21: Clerval's murder. Led before a magistrate as soon as he lands in Ireland at the end of Chapter 20, Victor is examined by Mr Kirwin about a man found murdered the night before. The body is Henry Clerval's, with the black mark of fingers on his neck. Victor lies for two months on the point of death and is freed only when the grand jury hears proof that he was in the Orkneys at the time. "the lifeless form of Henry Clerval stretched before me" The Creature's revenge strikes the friend who stood for everything warm in Victor's life, and Victor begins to call himself the murderer.
Chapters 22-23: The wedding night. Victor marries Elizabeth, sure that the Creature means to kill him, and the couple sail to Evian for the night. While he searches the passages of the inn for his enemy, Elizabeth is murdered in their room. His father dies of grief days later, and Victor, held for months as mad, finds a magistrate who listens but will not act. "The murderous mark of the fiend’s grasp was on her neck" Victor read the threat as aimed at himself, and his self-absorption cost Elizabeth her life.
Chapter 24: The pursuit north, and Victor's death. Victor swears vengeance at his family's tomb and follows the Creature along the Rhone to the Mediterranean, by ship towards the Black Sea, and through the wilds of Tartary and Russia to the frozen ocean, led on by messages the Creature leaves him. His story told, he urges Walton's crew to press on, but Walton agrees to turn back, and Victor dies. "Seek happiness in tranquillity, and avoid ambition" Victor's last advice is a warning against ambition, yet in the same breath he says another may succeed where he failed, so the lesson stays divided.
Chapter 24, the Creature's farewell: The Creature over Victor's body. Walton finds the Creature hanging over Victor's body in the cabin. The Creature grieves, confesses his crimes and his misery, says he will destroy himself on a funeral pile at the northern extremity of the globe, and leaps from the cabin window onto an ice-raft. "I was the slave, not the master, of an impulse, which I detested, yet could not disobey" The last speech in the novel is the Creature's, and the last image leaves him alive, so the question of who is the monster is handed to the reader.

Walton's Letters (Letters I-IV)

The frame narrative and Walton's ambition

Summary and Analysis

The novel opens with four letters from the explorer Robert Walton to his sister Margaret Saville. Walton is on a voyage to the North Pole, driven by an intense desire for discovery and glory. He writes of his loneliness and longing for a companion who shares his intellectual ambitions. His ship becomes trapped in ice, and the crew spot a gigantic figure on a dog-sled in the distance. Shortly afterwards, they rescue a half-frozen, emaciated man from the ice: Victor Frankenstein. Victor recognises in Walton the same dangerous ambition that destroyed his own life, and begins to tell his story as a cautionary tale. The letters establish the novel's nested narrative structure (Walton frames Victor's story, which in turn frames the Creature's) and introduce the central themes of ambition, isolation, and the pursuit of forbidden knowledge. Walton's desire to "tread a land never before imprinted by the foot of man" directly parallels Victor's desire to penetrate the secrets of nature, making Walton a double for Victor and a warning that unchecked ambition is a recurring human failing, not an isolated case.

Writer's Methods

Epistolary frame narrative: the letters-within-a-story structure creates layers of unreliable narration. The reader receives the Creature's story filtered through Victor, filtered through Walton, creating deliberate ambiguity about whose version of events to trust.

Chapters 1-5: Victor's Youth and the Creation

Summary and Analysis

Victor narrates his idyllic childhood in Geneva, surrounded by a loving family. He describes his early fascination with the outdated works of Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, and Albertus Magnus -- alchemists who sought the elixir of life. His father dismisses these works as "sad trash," but fails to explain why, leaving Victor's dangerous curiosity unchecked. At the University of Ingolstadt, Professor Waldman inspires Victor with the idea that modern chemistry has acquired "new and almost unlimited powers" and can "command the thunders of heaven." Victor becomes obsessed with discovering the principle of life itself. Working alone in his laboratory for months, neglecting his family, his health, and all human contact, he assembles a creature from charnel houses and dissecting rooms. The moment of creation in Chapter 5 is the novel's climactic scene: Victor succeeds, but the instant the Creature opens its "dull yellow eye," Victor is overwhelmed with disgust and horror at what he has made. “I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet.”

The language dehumanises the Creature before it even lives: "lifeless thing" and "at my feet" establish a hierarchy of contempt. "Infuse a spark of being" echoes both Promethean fire-theft and galvanic experiments of the period, grounding the Gothic horror in contemporary science.

“I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs... I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.”

The creation scene pivots on a single moment of revulsion. "Dull yellow eye" reduces the Creature to a single repulsive detail. The shift from "ardour" to "horror and disgust" mirrors the post-partum abandonment that Shelley, who had lost a baby shortly before writing the novel, understood viscerally. Victor's failure of responsibility at this instant drives the entire plot.

“How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form?”

Victor calls his creation a "catastrophe" and "wretch" within moments of its birth. Writer's Methods

Gothic atmosphere: Chapter 5 is set on "a dreary night of November" with "the rain pattered dismally against the panes." Shelley uses pathetic fallacy to externalise Victor's psychological horror and to create the quintessential Gothic creation scene.
Allusion to Prometheus: Victor's attempt to "infuse a spark of being" directly evokes the Promethean myth (the novel's subtitle is "The Modern Prometheus"). Like Prometheus, Victor steals creative power from the gods and suffers terrible consequences.

Chapter 10: The Creature Speaks

The meeting on the Mer de Glace

Victor travels to the Alps seeking consolation in the sublime mountain scenery. On the Mer de Glace glacier near Mont Blanc, the Creature appears and confronts him. Victor reacts with fury and disgust, calling the Creature a "vile insect," a "wretched devil," and an "abhorred monster." The Creature, however, speaks with eloquence, dignity, and moral authority that completely upends the reader's expectations. He demands that Victor listen to his story: "I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous." The Creature argues that he has been driven to violence not by inherent evil but by rejection, loneliness, and the cruelty of every human being he has encountered. He invokes his rights as Victor's creation: "I am thy creature, and I will be even mild and docile to my natural lord and king if thou wilt also perform thy part, the which thou owest me." The Creature frames his relationship with Victor in the language of feudal obligation and divine covenant. "Natural lord and king" echoes Milton's Paradise Lost, positioning Victor as a negligent God. The Creature generalises from his experience to a devastating social observation: society despises those it has harmed. Chapters 16-17: The Bargain

The Creature's demand for a companion

Summary and Analysis

The Creature continues his narrative. He describes how, after months of secretly observing and helping the De Lacey family, he finally revealed himself to the blind old man, only to be violently attacked and driven away by Felix. Heartbroken by this final rejection, he declares "everlasting war against the species" and travels to Geneva, where he accidentally encounters Victor's young brother William. When William reveals his surname, the Creature strangles him in a rage, then frames the innocent Justine Moritz by planting Victor's miniature portrait in her pocket. The Creature feels a brief thrill of power but is immediately consumed by misery. He then makes his central demand to Victor: create a female companion for him. He argues that he has been driven to violence only by loneliness and that a mate would allow them both to withdraw from human society forever. "My vices are the children of a forced solitude that I abhor, and my virtues will necessarily arise when I live in communion with an equal." Victor is initially reluctant but is gradually persuaded by the Creature's argument, and the chapter ends with Victor agreeing to the bargain. The Creature's ultimatum captures the tragic logic of his transformation. Denied affection, he will seize the only kind of power that remains available to him. Shelley shows that rejection does not extinguish the desire for connection -- it warps it into a hunger for terror.

Writer's Methods

Persuasive rhetoric: the Creature constructs a logical argument for the female companion that is difficult to refute. Shelley gives his rhetoric the force of Enlightenment reason, forcing the reader to engage intellectually as well as emotionally.
Moral complexity: the Creature is simultaneously sympathetic (his loneliness is agonising) and horrifying (he has murdered a child and framed an innocent woman). Shelley refuses to let the reader settle into a comfortable judgement.

Chapters 20-24: Destruction of the Female and the Pursuit

Victor breaks his promise and the Creature's vengeance

Summary and Analysis

Victor travels to a remote island in Orkney to construct the female creature, but as he works he is paralysed by doubt. He fears that the female, likely "to become a thinking and reasoning animal", "might refuse to comply with a compact made before her creation". He fears they might breed and create "a race of devils." Looking up, he sees the Creature watching him through the window with a "ghastly grin." In a moment of horror and revulsion, Victor tears the half-finished female to pieces before the Creature's eyes. The Creature, devastated, delivers his most chilling threat: "I shall be with you on your wedding-night." Victor interprets this as a threat to his own life, but the Creature means Elizabeth. Victor disposes of the remains at sea, drifts to Ireland, and is arrested for the murder of Henry Clerval, whom the Creature has strangled. After his acquittal, Victor marries Elizabeth, but on their wedding night the Creature fulfils his promise and murders her. Victor's father dies of grief shortly afterwards. Victor, now as isolated and wretched as the Creature, dedicates his remaining life to pursuing the Creature across Europe and into the Arctic, where Walton finds him. The pursuit ends with Victor's death aboard Walton's ship and the Creature's final appearance: he mourns over Victor's body, expressing genuine grief and self-loathing, then declares he will travel to the "most northern extremity of the globe" and burn himself on a funeral pyre. Victor projects his worst fears onto the unfinished female creature. The phrase "for its own sake" attributes motiveless malice to a being that does not yet exist. Victor's reasoning reveals his inability to see his creations as anything other than monsters, repeating the prejudice that caused the Creature's suffering in the first place.

“I shall be with you on your wedding-night.”

The Creature's most famous threat is a masterpiece of ambiguity. Victor interprets it as a promise to kill him; it actually means the Creature will kill Elizabeth. The misunderstanding dramatises Victor's fatal self-absorption: even at this moment, he cannot imagine that the Creature's vengeance will target someone other than himself.

“In a fit of enthusiastic madness I created a rational creature and was bound towards him to assure, as far as was in my power, his happiness and well-being. This was my duty.”

Victor finally acknowledges his parental obligation -- but only to justify destroying the female. The phrase "enthusiastic madness" rewrites his earlier "ardour" as insanity. The admission of "duty" is bitterly ironic: Victor recognises the principle of responsibility only when it serves his decision to deny it.

“You are my creator, but I am your master; -- obey!”

The Creature inverts the creator-creation hierarchy. The dash creates a dramatic pause before the imperative "obey!" The power reversal is complete: by refusing responsibility, Victor has given the Creature absolute power over his life. Shelley suggests that abandoned creations do not disappear -- they return with a vengeance.

“I, the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on.”

Repeated from the Creature's earlier speech, this line gains devastating weight in its final context. The Creature's self-description as an "abortion" -- something that should never have existed -- becomes his epitaph, a final indictment of Victor's failure as creator and parent.

Letters 1-3: Walton sets out for the Pole. Robert Walton writes to his sister, Margaret Saville, in England, first from St Petersburgh and then from Archangel, as he prepares a voyage towards the North Pole. He dreams of discovery and glory, and tells her that he has no friend to share them. "I shall satiate my ardent curiosity with the sight of a part of the world never before visited" Walton's hunger for knowledge and glory is Victor's before it went wrong, so the novel opens on a warning waiting to be heard.
Letter 4: The stranger on the ice. With the ship closed in by ice, the crew see a gigantic figure drive a dog-sledge north. Next morning they take aboard a second traveller, his limbs nearly frozen, from a sledge on a drifting fragment of ice. He soon asks which way the first went, and in time decides to tell Walton his story. "You seek for knowledge and wisdom, as I once did" Victor tells his life as a cautionary tale, so everything that follows is offered to Walton, and to the reader, as a lesson.
Chapters 1-3: A Geneva childhood and a fatal subject. Victor grows up in a loving Genevese family with Elizabeth Lavenza, taken in as a child, and his friend Henry Clerval. At thirteen he discovers Cornelius Agrippa, whom his father dismisses without explaining why. His mother dies of scarlet fever caught nursing Elizabeth, and at seventeen he leaves for the university of Ingolstadt, where a lecture by M. Waldman fires his ambition. "Natural philosophy is the genius that has regulated my fate" Victor traces his ruin to these years, and a reader can weigh how far he blames chance, his father and destiny rather than himself.
Chapter 4: The secret toil. Victor discovers, he says, the cause of life, and resolves to build a human being about eight feet tall. He works alone for months, collecting bones from charnel-houses and materials from the dissecting room and slaughter-house, blind to the summer and to the friends and family whom he knows his silence is worrying. "Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge" The chapter shows the cost of ambition before the experiment succeeds: Victor sacrifices every human tie to it.
Chapter 5: The creation, and the flight. On a dreary November night the Creature opens a dull yellow eye. Victor, horrified by what he has made, runs from the room, then wakes to find the Creature at his bedside, one hand stretched out, and flees again. Next morning Henry Clerval arrives, and Victor collapses into a nervous fever that lasts for months. "breathless horror and disgust filled my heart" The novel's turning point: every later death follows from Victor's refusal, here, to care for the being he has made.
Chapters 6-8: William's murder and Justine's trial. A letter tells Victor that his youngest brother, William, has been found dead with the mark of a murderer's finger on his neck. Returning to Geneva, Victor glimpses the Creature in a storm and knows the truth, but says nothing. Justine Moritz, a servant the family loves, is accused when the portrait of Victor's mother is found in her pocket. She is condemned at her trial and executed, having confessed falsely under pressure from her confessor. "I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was" An innocent woman dies for the Creature's crime and Victor's silence, and her words about being called a monster anticipate the Creature's whole story.
Chapters 9-10: The meeting on the glacier. Sunk in grief and guilt, Victor escapes to the Alps and climbs to Montanvert above the sea of ice. The Creature bounds towards him across the glacier. Victor curses him, but the Creature, calm and eloquent, asks to be heard before he is judged, and leads him to a hut on the mountain to tell his tale. "I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel" The Creature speaks for the first time, and his reasoning voice overturns everything Victor has told us about him.
Chapters 11-14: Learning to be human. The Creature describes his first confused sensations in the forest near Ingolstadt, finding a fire left by beggars, and being driven from a village with stones. Hiding in a hovel against a cottage, he watches the De Laceys, blind old De Lacey, Felix and Agatha, gathers firewood for them at night, and learns to speak and read as Felix teaches the newly arrived Safie. "Was I then a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled, and whom all men disowned?" At the centre of the novel the Creature's education shows him gentle and generous, which makes the rejection to come a test of the reader as much as of him.
Chapter 15: Three books and a rejection. The Creature finds Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives and the Sorrows of Werter, and reads Victor's journal of his making, found “in the pocket of the dress which I had taken from your laboratory”. He reveals himself to the blind De Lacey, who treats him kindly, until Felix, Safie and Agatha come in and Felix beats him away with a stick. "Hateful day when I received life!" The hope of acceptance is raised as high as it goes and then destroyed, and the Creature now knows exactly who made him and how.
Chapter 16: War on humankind. The De Laceys abandon the cottage and the Creature burns it. On his way to Geneva he saves a young girl from a river and is shot by a countryman, probably the companion she had been running from in play. Near Geneva he meets William, kills him on learning that he is a Frankenstein, and places the portrait in the dress of Justine, asleep in a barn. "Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?" The Creature crosses into violence, and the novel asks the reader to hold his suffering and his guilt in view at the same time.
Chapter 17: The demand for a companion. Repeating the demand that closes Chapter 16, the Creature insists that Victor make him a female companion, promising that the two of them will go to the vast wilds of South America and never be seen again. Victor refuses in anger, is slowly moved by the argument, and at last consents. "If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear" Victor accepts a creator's duty for the first time, and the rest of the novel turns on whether he keeps his word.
Chapters 18-20: The second creation destroyed. After months of delay Victor travels through England and Scotland with Clerval, then works alone on one of the remotest of the Orkneys. Fearing that the female might reject her mate, or that the pair might have children, he tears her to pieces as the Creature watches at the window. The Creature swears revenge, and Victor sinks the remains at sea. "I shall be with you on your wedding-night" Victor's refusal is arguably both his most responsible act and his most destructive one, which is why it divides readers.
Chapter 21: Clerval's murder. Led before a magistrate as soon as he lands in Ireland at the end of Chapter 20, Victor is examined by Mr Kirwin about a man found murdered the night before. The body is Henry Clerval's, with the black mark of fingers on his neck. Victor lies for two months on the point of death and is freed only when the grand jury hears proof that he was in the Orkneys at the time. "the lifeless form of Henry Clerval stretched before me" The Creature's revenge strikes the friend who stood for everything warm in Victor's life, and Victor begins to call himself the murderer.
Chapters 22-23: The wedding night. Victor marries Elizabeth, sure that the Creature means to kill him, and the couple sail to Evian for the night. While he searches the passages of the inn for his enemy, Elizabeth is murdered in their room. His father dies of grief days later, and Victor, held for months as mad, finds a magistrate who listens but will not act. "The murderous mark of the fiend’s grasp was on her neck" Victor read the threat as aimed at himself, and his self-absorption cost Elizabeth her life.
Chapter 24: The pursuit north, and Victor's death. Victor swears vengeance at his family's tomb and follows the Creature along the Rhone to the Mediterranean, by ship towards the Black Sea, and through the wilds of Tartary and Russia to the frozen ocean, led on by messages the Creature leaves him. His story told, he urges Walton's crew to press on, but Walton agrees to turn back, and Victor dies. "Seek happiness in tranquillity, and avoid ambition" Victor's last advice is a warning against ambition, yet in the same breath he says another may succeed where he failed, so the lesson stays divided.
Chapter 24, the Creature's farewell: The Creature over Victor's body. Walton finds the Creature hanging over Victor's body in the cabin. The Creature grieves, confesses his crimes and his misery, says he will destroy himself on a funeral pile at the northern extremity of the globe, and leaps from the cabin window onto an ice-raft. "I was the slave, not the master, of an impulse, which I detested, yet could not disobey" The last speech in the novel is the Creature's, and the last image leaves him alive, so the question of who is the monster is handed to the reader.

Allusion to Prometheus: Victor's attempt to "infuse a spark of being" directly evokes the Promethean myth (the novel's subtitle is "The Modern Prometheus"). Like Prometheus, Victor steals creative power from the gods and suffers terrible consequences.
