On a wet November afternoon ten-year-old Jane hides in a window-seat at Gateshead with Bewick's History of British Birds. Her cousin John Reed finds her and throws the book at her; she falls and cuts her head on the door, fights back, and Mrs Reed orders her locked in the red-room.

Chapter 1: The book and the blow. On a wet November afternoon ten-year-old Jane hides in a window-seat at Gateshead with Bewick's History of British Birds. Chapter 2: The red-room. Jane is locked in the room where her uncle died. She sees her reflection as a ghost, rages at the injustice of her treatment, and when a light moves on the wall she believes her uncle's spirit has come. She screams, is refused release by Mrs Reed, and faints. "Unjust!—unjust!" The novel's first prison, and the first time Jane names injustice for herself.
Chapter 4: The black pillar. Mr Brocklehurst comes to interview Jane for Lowood, and Mrs Reed tells him she is deceitful. When he has gone, Jane turns on her aunt and tells her the truth about her cruelty, and feels for the first time a sense of freedom and triumph. "I am not deceitful" Speaking out wins Jane a moment of liberty, though she soon feels its cost.
Chapters 7 and 8: The stool of shame. At Lowood, Brocklehurst lectures the half-starved girls on vanity while his wife and daughters arrive in silks and furs. He makes Jane stand on a stool before the school and calls her a liar. Helen Burns comforts her, and Miss Temple later clears her name. "my mission is to mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh" The novel's sharpest picture of religion used as power, and of the kindness that answers it.
Chapter 9: Resurgam. Typhus sweeps through Lowood in the spring. Helen, dying of consumption, lets Jane share her bed and speaks calmly of going to God, and the two girls fall asleep together. A day or two later Jane learns that Miss Temple found her at dawn with her arms round Helen, who had died in the night. Years later a tablet marks the grave with the word Resurgam. "I believe; I have faith: I am going to God." Helen's faith is the first model Jane measures herself against, and does not follow.
Chapters 11 and 12: Thornfield and the laugh. Aged about eighteen, Jane arrives at Thornfield as governess to Adèle. Mrs Fairfax shows her the house, and on the third storey she hears a strange laugh, which is blamed on the servant Grace Poole. Pacing that corridor, Jane longs for a wider life. "women feel just as men feel" The novel's great argument for women's freedom is interrupted by the laugh of the woman hidden upstairs.
Chapter 12: The rider in Hay Lane. Walking to Hay with a letter, Jane hears a horse at dusk and thinks of Bessie's tales of the Gytrash. The horse slips on ice and its rider falls; Jane helps him remount. Back at Thornfield she learns he is her employer, Mr Rochester. "The man, the human being, broke the spell at once." Their first meeting reverses the romantic convention: the hero falls, and the heroine helps him up.
Chapter 15: Fire in the night. Rochester tells Jane about Adèle's mother, Céline. That night Jane hears the laugh again, finds smoke pouring from Rochester's room and his bed curtains on fire, and puts out the flames with water. He blames Grace Poole and holds Jane's hand as he thanks her. "My cherished preserver, good-night!" Jane saves Rochester's life, and the danger hidden in the house comes into the open.
Chapters 17 and 18: The house party. Rochester fills Thornfield with fashionable guests and appears to court the beautiful Blanche Ingram, who sneers at governesses in Jane's hearing. Jane watches from a window-seat, admits to the reader that she loves him, and judges Blanche shallow. "half of them detestable and the rest ridiculous" Class is at its most visible: Jane is present at the party but not part of it.
Chapter 20: A wound in the night. A visitor from Jamaica, Richard Mason, is attacked in a room on the third storey. Rochester asks Jane to sit with the bleeding man in silence while he fetches a surgeon, and Mason is sent away before sunrise without an explanation. The secret nearly breaks out, and Jane's trust in Rochester is tested.
Chapter 21: Mrs Reed's confession. Jane returns to Gateshead to her dying aunt. John Reed has died, reportedly by suicide. Mrs Reed confesses that three years earlier she hid a letter from Jane's uncle John Eyre and told him Jane was dead. Jane forgives her; Mrs Reed will not be reconciled. "You were born, I think, to be my torment" The adult Jane can forgive the woman who wronged her, and the uncle who will change her life comes into view.
Chapter 23: The proposal in the orchard. On Midsummer-eve Rochester lets Jane believe he will marry Blanche and send her to Ireland. She declares her equality with him, and he proposes. That night a storm breaks, and the great horse-chestnut in the orchard is struck by lightning and split. "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me" Jane wins her argument for equality, and nature signals at once that the union is flawed.
Chapter 24: Silks and a seraglio. Rochester wants to cover Jane in jewels and silks. She refuses to be kept, insists on remaining Adèle's governess at her salary, and writes to her uncle in Madeira, hoping for money of her own. "I will not be your English Céline Varens." Jane's letter seeking independence is the one that brings Mason to the wedding.
Chapter 25: The torn veil. Two nights before the wedding a woman Jane has never seen enters her room, puts on the wedding veil, looks in the mirror, tears the veil in two and tramples it. Rochester tells Jane it must have been Grace Poole. "Of the foul German spectre—the Vampyre." The hidden wife confronts the bride, and destroys the symbol of the marriage.
Chapter 26: The impediment. At the altar the solicitor Briggs, with Richard Mason, declares that Rochester is already married. Rochester takes everyone to the third storey and shows them his wife, Bertha, who attacks him. Alone, Jane feels all her hopes die. "The marriage cannot go on: I declare the existence of an impediment." The mystery is solved at the worst possible moment, and Volume II ends in despair.
Chapter 27: Flight from Thornfield. Rochester tells Jane the story of his marriage and begs her to live with him abroad. Although she loves him, and even her conscience and reason seem to side with him, she refuses. After a dream in which a moonlit figure tells her to flee temptation, she slips out of Thornfield in the short summer night with twenty shillings. "I care for myself." The novel's moral centre: Jane chooses self-respect over the man she loves.
Chapters 28 and 29: Destitute at Whitcross. Set down at a crossroads on the moors, Jane finds she has left her parcel in the coach. She sleeps on the heath, begs for food, and at last, turned away by the servant Hannah, collapses at the door of Moor House, where St John Rivers takes her in. "I am absolutely destitute." Having chosen independence, Jane experiences its cost at its most extreme.
Chapter 33: Twenty thousand pounds. St John reveals that he knows Jane's real name, that her uncle John Eyre has died and left her twenty thousand pounds, and that the Rivers are her cousins. Jane insists on dividing the money equally among the four of them. "Were we not four?" Jane gains money and family in one stroke, and values the family more.
Chapter 34: The missionary's wife. St John asks Jane to go with him to India as his wife and fellow worker. She offers to go as his sister, but he insists on marriage for the sake of the work, and Jane tells him she scorns his idea of love. "God and nature intended you for a missionary's wife." The second temptation mirrors the first: duty without love instead of love without law.
Chapter 35: The voice. On the verge of giving in to St John, Jane hears a voice cry her name. She recognises it as Rochester's, answers that she is coming, and resolves to find out what has become of him. "Jane! Jane! Jane!" The one supernatural event the novel never explains is the one that sends Jane home.
Chapter 36: A blackened ruin. Jane finds Thornfield burned to a shell. The innkeeper tells her that Bertha set the fire; that Rochester got the servants out and went back for his wife, who leapt from the roof and died; and that as he came down the great staircase the house fell in, costing him an eye and a hand, and then the sight of the other eye. "I saw a blackened ruin." The obstacle to the marriage is removed, at the cost of Bertha's life and Rochester's sight.
Chapter 37: Ferndean. Jane finds Rochester at his lonely manor-house in the woods. She tells him she is rich and independent, and they are reconciled; he says he has come to see the hand of God in his suffering, and that he called her name on the same night she heard it. "I am an independent woman now." The lovers meet again as equals, each changed by what they have suffered.
Chapter 38: Reader, I married him. Jane and Rochester marry quietly. Ten years on she describes a perfect companionship; Rochester has recovered the sight of one eye and has seen his first-born son. The novel ends with a letter from St John, working in India and expecting to die. "Reader, I married him." Jane tells her ending in her own voice, then gives the last word to the man she refused.

Chapter 1: The Red Room and Jane's Rebellion

Significance

The opening chapter establishes Jane as an outsider within the Reed household and introduces the novel's central preoccupation with injustice, resistance and the right to speak. Jane's refusal to accept John Reed's bullying marks her as a character who will challenge authority throughout the narrative. Chapter 2: The Red Room

Significance

The red room is the novel's first major symbolic space. Jane is imprisoned in the room where her uncle Reed died, and its oppressive atmosphere -- red furnishings, locked door, dim light -- creates a Gothic setting that externalises Jane's emotional state. The scene dramatises the powerlessness of a child who is dependent on hostile relatives, and Jane's terror at the thought of Mr Reed's ghost introduces the supernatural element that recurs throughout the novel. Chapter 4: Jane Confronts Mrs Reed

Significance

This chapter marks a turning point in Jane's development. When Mrs Reed tells Mr Brocklehurst that Jane is a liar, Jane is filled with righteous fury and, after Brocklehurst leaves, confronts her aunt directly. The confrontation is the first time Jane exercises genuine rhetorical power over an adult. The chapter explores the relationship between truth, power and social class: Mrs Reed can lie about Jane with impunity because of her social position, while Jane's truthful protest is treated as insubordination.

However, it also provides Jane with her first meaningful relationships: Helen Burns and Miss Temple. Helen's stoic Christianity offers Jane an alternative to her own fierce resistance, while Miss Temple models female authority grounded in compassion rather than cruelty. The typhus epidemic that kills Helen exposes the material conditions of poverty and class inequality that Bronte critiques throughout the novel.

Jane arrives at Thornfield as a governess, achieving a degree of financial independence for the first time. The Gothic atmosphere of the house -- its dark corridors, mysterious third-floor laughter, and isolated setting -- creates tension and foreshadows Bertha's revelation. Jane's first meeting with Rochester subverts romantic convention: he falls from his horse and she helps him, reversing the expected gender dynamics. Their intellectual sparring establishes a relationship based on mental equality rather than social hierarchy.

"Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless?"

Jane lists every social disadvantage held against her -- poverty, anonymity, plainness, small stature -- and rejects the idea that external circumstances determine inner worth. Chapters 23-27: The Proposal, the Wedding, and the Revelation

Significance

This sequence forms the novel's emotional and structural climax. Rochester's proposal under the horse-chestnut tree is followed by the tree being struck by lightning, a pathetic fallacy that signals the unnaturalness of their union while Bertha lives. The interrupted wedding is the novel's most dramatic scene: Mason's revelation that Rochester already has a wife destroys Jane's happiness and forces her to choose between passion and principle. Chapter 27, in which Jane decides to leave, is the moral centre of the novel. Her refusal to become Rochester's mistress despite her love is an act of radical self-respect.

The phrase "independent will" is the novel's philosophical core: Jane defines herself not by social role or relationship but by her capacity for autonomous moral choice.

"I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself."

This is Jane's most powerful statement of self-respect. She anticipates the loneliness that will follow her departure and accepts it as the price of integrity. The escalating tricolon ("solitary... friendless... unsustained") emphasises how much she is sacrificing, making her resolve all the more impressive. The verb "respect" is deliberately chosen: she values self-respect above romantic love.

"Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation... they have a worth -- so I have always believed; and if I cannot believe it now, it is because I am insane -- quite insane."

Jane articulates a moral philosophy rooted in consistency: principles that bend under pressure are not principles at all. Her acknowledgement of temptation makes her adherence more heroic, not less. The self-correction ("quite insane") reveals the emotional cost of her decision while reaffirming her commitment to reason over feeling.

Chapters 28-35: Moor House and St John Rivers

Significance

After fleeing Thornfield, Jane nearly dies on the moors before being taken in by the Rivers siblings. This section tests Jane's independence in a new way: St John Rivers offers her a life of purpose through missionary work but demands she marry him without love. His cold, dutiful Christianity contrasts with Helen Burns's warmth and Rochester's passion. Jane's inheritance from her uncle Eyre gives her financial independence for the first time, and her decision to share it equally with the Rivers siblings shows her valuing family and generosity over wealth. St John's proposal is the novel's second great temptation, and Jane's refusal of it is as significant as her refusal of Rochester's offer to be his mistress.

"It was a grand boon doubtless; and independence would be glorious"

Jane's response to her inheritance shows how financial independence reshapes her prospects. The word "glorious" shows how much independence means to her, even though the legacy comes "to my isolated self" rather than to a family. Bronte makes a pointed social observation: Jane's character has not changed, but money has given her the freedom to express the self she always was.

"If I join St John, I abandon half myself: if I go to India, I go to premature death."

Jane frames St John's proposal as a form of self-destruction. The phrase "abandon half myself" means surrendering her emotional and passionate nature to a man who demands only duty. Bronte presents this as just as dangerous as Rochester's earlier offer: both men ask Jane to sacrifice part of her identity. Only a relationship that honours the whole self is acceptable.

Compare St John's proposal with Rochester's to explore how Bronte constructs the theme of independence. St John represents duty without love; Rochester offered love without legality. Jane needs both.

Chapter 38: The Ending: "Reader, I married him"

Significance

The final chapter resolves every tension in the novel. Jane returns to find Thornfield burned down and Rochester blinded and maimed. Their reunion reverses the power dynamic: Jane now has money and independence, while Rochester is physically dependent. Bronte is careful to establish that Jane marries Rochester as an equal, not a subordinate. The famous opening line of the chapter -- "Reader, I married him" -- uses the active voice to make Jane the agent of her own story. Rochester's partial recovery of sight when their first child is born suggests that moral redemption can restore what sin destroyed.

The most famous line in the novel. The direct address to the reader creates intimacy and asserts narrative authority. Crucially, Jane says "I married him" rather than "he married me" -- she is the grammatical subject, the one who acts. This syntactic choice encapsulates the entire novel's argument: Jane's story is defined by her own choices, not by the men around her.

"I am my husband's life as fully as he is mine... we are precisely suited in character -- perfect concord is the result."

Jane describes a marriage of absolute equality and mutual dependence. The phrase "precisely suited" suggests complementarity rather than hierarchy, and "perfect concord" recalls the "discord" of Chapter 2, bringing the novel full circle. Jane has found the belonging she sought from the first page, but only on terms that preserve her selfhood.

The ending is essential for discussing whether Bronte offers a feminist or conservative resolution. Consider whether Rochester's injuries are necessary to create equality, and what this suggests about the power dynamics Bronte saw in Victorian marriage.

Chapter 1: The book and the blow. On a wet November afternoon ten-year-old Jane hides in a window-seat at Gateshead with Bewick's History of British Birds. Her cousin John Reed finds her and throws the book at her; she falls and cuts her head on the door, fights back, and Mrs Reed orders her locked in the red-room. "You are like a murderer—you are like a slave-driver—you are like the Roman emperors!" Jane's first act of defiance is to name the wrong done to her out loud, the pattern of her whole life.
Chapter 2: The red-room. Jane is locked in the room where her uncle died. She sees her reflection as a ghost, rages at the injustice of her treatment, and when a light moves on the wall she believes her uncle's spirit has come. She screams, is refused release by Mrs Reed, and faints. "Unjust!—unjust!" The novel's first prison, and the first time Jane names injustice for herself.
Chapter 4: The black pillar. Mr Brocklehurst comes to interview Jane for Lowood, and Mrs Reed tells him she is deceitful. When he has gone, Jane turns on her aunt and tells her the truth about her cruelty, and feels for the first time a sense of freedom and triumph. "I am not deceitful" Speaking out wins Jane a moment of liberty, though she soon feels its cost.
Chapters 7 and 8: The stool of shame. At Lowood, Brocklehurst lectures the half-starved girls on vanity while his wife and daughters arrive in silks and furs. He makes Jane stand on a stool before the school and calls her a liar. Helen Burns comforts her, and Miss Temple later clears her name. "my mission is to mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh" The novel's sharpest picture of religion used as power, and of the kindness that answers it.
Chapter 9: Resurgam. Typhus sweeps through Lowood in the spring. Helen, dying of consumption, lets Jane share her bed and speaks calmly of going to God, and the two girls fall asleep together. A day or two later Jane learns that Miss Temple found her at dawn with her arms round Helen, who had died in the night. Years later a tablet marks the grave with the word Resurgam. "I believe; I have faith: I am going to God." Helen's faith is the first model Jane measures herself against, and does not follow.
Chapters 11 and 12: Thornfield and the laugh. Aged about eighteen, Jane arrives at Thornfield as governess to Adèle. Mrs Fairfax shows her the house, and on the third storey she hears a strange laugh, which is blamed on the servant Grace Poole. Pacing that corridor, Jane longs for a wider life. "women feel just as men feel" The novel's great argument for women's freedom is interrupted by the laugh of the woman hidden upstairs.
Chapter 12: The rider in Hay Lane. Walking to Hay with a letter, Jane hears a horse at dusk and thinks of Bessie's tales of the Gytrash. The horse slips on ice and its rider falls; Jane helps him remount. Back at Thornfield she learns he is her employer, Mr Rochester. "The man, the human being, broke the spell at once." Their first meeting reverses the romantic convention: the hero falls, and the heroine helps him up.
Chapter 15: Fire in the night. Rochester tells Jane about Adèle's mother, Céline. That night Jane hears the laugh again, finds smoke pouring from Rochester's room and his bed curtains on fire, and puts out the flames with water. He blames Grace Poole and holds Jane's hand as he thanks her. "My cherished preserver, good-night!" Jane saves Rochester's life, and the danger hidden in the house comes into the open.
Chapters 17 and 18: The house party. Rochester fills Thornfield with fashionable guests and appears to court the beautiful Blanche Ingram, who sneers at governesses in Jane's hearing. Jane watches from a window-seat, admits to the reader that she loves him, and judges Blanche shallow. "half of them detestable and the rest ridiculous" Class is at its most visible: Jane is present at the party but not part of it.
Chapter 20: A wound in the night. A visitor from Jamaica, Richard Mason, is attacked in a room on the third storey. Rochester asks Jane to sit with the bleeding man in silence while he fetches a surgeon, and Mason is sent away before sunrise without an explanation. The secret nearly breaks out, and Jane's trust in Rochester is tested.
Chapter 21: Mrs Reed's confession. Jane returns to Gateshead to her dying aunt. John Reed has died, reportedly by suicide. Mrs Reed confesses that three years earlier she hid a letter from Jane's uncle John Eyre and told him Jane was dead. Jane forgives her; Mrs Reed will not be reconciled. "You were born, I think, to be my torment" The adult Jane can forgive the woman who wronged her, and the uncle who will change her life comes into view.
Chapter 23: The proposal in the orchard. On Midsummer-eve Rochester lets Jane believe he will marry Blanche and send her to Ireland. She declares her equality with him, and he proposes. That night a storm breaks, and the great horse-chestnut in the orchard is struck by lightning and split. "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me" Jane wins her argument for equality, and nature signals at once that the union is flawed.
Chapter 24: Silks and a seraglio. Rochester wants to cover Jane in jewels and silks. She refuses to be kept, insists on remaining Adèle's governess at her salary, and writes to her uncle in Madeira, hoping for money of her own. "I will not be your English Céline Varens." Jane's letter seeking independence is the one that brings Mason to the wedding.
Chapter 25: The torn veil. Two nights before the wedding a woman Jane has never seen enters her room, puts on the wedding veil, looks in the mirror, tears the veil in two and tramples it. Rochester tells Jane it must have been Grace Poole. "Of the foul German spectre—the Vampyre." The hidden wife confronts the bride, and destroys the symbol of the marriage.
Chapter 26: The impediment. At the altar the solicitor Briggs, with Richard Mason, declares that Rochester is already married. Rochester takes everyone to the third storey and shows them his wife, Bertha, who attacks him. Alone, Jane feels all her hopes die. "The marriage cannot go on: I declare the existence of an impediment." The mystery is solved at the worst possible moment, and Volume II ends in despair.
Chapter 27: Flight from Thornfield. Rochester tells Jane the story of his marriage and begs her to live with him abroad. Although she loves him, and even her conscience and reason seem to side with him, she refuses. After a dream in which a moonlit figure tells her to flee temptation, she slips out of Thornfield in the short summer night with twenty shillings. "I care for myself." The novel's moral centre: Jane chooses self-respect over the man she loves.
Chapters 28 and 29: Destitute at Whitcross. Set down at a crossroads on the moors, Jane finds she has left her parcel in the coach. She sleeps on the heath, begs for food, and at last, turned away by the servant Hannah, collapses at the door of Moor House, where St John Rivers takes her in. "I am absolutely destitute." Having chosen independence, Jane experiences its cost at its most extreme.
Chapter 33: Twenty thousand pounds. St John reveals that he knows Jane's real name, that her uncle John Eyre has died and left her twenty thousand pounds, and that the Rivers are her cousins. Jane insists on dividing the money equally among the four of them. "Were we not four?" Jane gains money and family in one stroke, and values the family more.
Chapter 34: The missionary's wife. St John asks Jane to go with him to India as his wife and fellow worker. She offers to go as his sister, but he insists on marriage for the sake of the work, and Jane tells him she scorns his idea of love. "God and nature intended you for a missionary's wife." The second temptation mirrors the first: duty without love instead of love without law.
Chapter 35: The voice. On the verge of giving in to St John, Jane hears a voice cry her name. She recognises it as Rochester's, answers that she is coming, and resolves to find out what has become of him. "Jane! Jane! Jane!" The one supernatural event the novel never explains is the one that sends Jane home.
Chapter 36: A blackened ruin. Jane finds Thornfield burned to a shell. The innkeeper tells her that Bertha set the fire; that Rochester got the servants out and went back for his wife, who leapt from the roof and died; and that as he came down the great staircase the house fell in, costing him an eye and a hand, and then the sight of the other eye. "I saw a blackened ruin." The obstacle to the marriage is removed, at the cost of Bertha's life and Rochester's sight.
Chapter 37: Ferndean. Jane finds Rochester at his lonely manor-house in the woods. She tells him she is rich and independent, and they are reconciled; he says he has come to see the hand of God in his suffering, and that he called her name on the same night she heard it. "I am an independent woman now." The lovers meet again as equals, each changed by what they have suffered.
Chapter 38: Reader, I married him. Jane and Rochester marry quietly. Ten years on she describes a perfect companionship; Rochester has recovered the sight of one eye and has seen his first-born son. The novel ends with a letter from St John, working in India and expecting to die. "Reader, I married him." Jane tells her ending in her own voice, then gives the last word to the man she refused.

Chapter 1: The Red Room and Jane's Rebellion

John Reed bullies Jane, striking her and throwing a book at her head.
Jane fights back physically and verbally, calling John a "wicked and cruel boy" and comparing him to a Roman emperor.

Chapter 2: The Red Room

Significance

Jane is locked in the red room, the chamber where Mr Reed died.
She examines her own reflection in the mirror, seeing herself as a strange, otherworldly figure.
She reflects on the injustice of her treatment and questions why she is always the one punished.
She sees a light on the wall, believes it is a ghost, screams, and faints after Mrs Reed refuses to release her.

"I was a discord in Gateshead Hall; I was like nobody there."

"Unjust! -- unjust!" said my reason, forced by the agonising stimulus into precocious though transitory power.

Chapter 4: Jane Confronts Mrs Reed

Mr Brocklehurst visits to interview Jane before she is sent to Lowood.
Mrs Reed tells Brocklehurst that Jane is deceitful, poisoning his view of her in advance.
After Brocklehurst leaves, Jane confronts Mrs Reed and accuses her of cruelty.
Jane feels a brief triumph but then experiences the loneliness and guilt that follow anger.

Exam Tip

This chapter is excellent for exploring the theme of independence and Jane's development as a speaker. Compare her verbal power here with her later confrontations with Rochester and St John.

Chapters 5-9: Lowood School

Significance

Jane arrives at Lowood and discovers the harsh conditions: cold, hunger, and strict discipline.
Brocklehurst publicly humiliates Jane by calling her a liar, echoing Mrs Reed's accusation.
Jane befriends Helen Burns, who teaches her patience and Christian forgiveness.
Miss Temple clears Jane's name by writing to Mr Lloyd, restoring her reputation.
A typhus epidemic sweeps Lowood; Helen dies of consumption in the night, while Jane sleeps beside her with her arms round her.

Use the Lowood chapters to explore religion (Helen vs Brocklehurst as contrasting models of Christianity), class inequality, and the importance of female friendship and mentorship.

Chapters 11-15: Arrival at Thornfield and Meeting Rochester

She hears strange laughter from the third floor, which is attributed to the servant Grace Poole.
Jane meets Rochester on the road when his horse slips on ice and he falls.

Exam Tip

These chapters are essential for discussing gender roles and the Gothic setting of Thornfield. The feminist passage from Chapter 12 is one of the most frequently quoted in exams.

Chapters 23-27: The Proposal, the Wedding, and the Revelation

Rochester proposes to Jane in the garden; the horse-chestnut tree is split by lightning that night.
During the wedding, Mason and the solicitor Briggs halt the ceremony, revealing Bertha Mason's existence.
Rochester takes the wedding party to the third floor and shows them Bertha.
Rochester begs Jane to stay as his mistress; she refuses and leaves Thornfield at dawn.

Chapters 28-35: Moor House and St John Rivers

Significance

Jane wanders the moors, begging for food, and collapses on the doorstep of Moor House.
She is taken in by Diana, Mary and St John Rivers.
Jane teaches at the village school St John establishes for her.
Jane inherits twenty thousand pounds from her uncle John Eyre and discovers the Rivers are her cousins.
She divides the inheritance equally among the four of them.
St John asks Jane to marry him and accompany him as a missionary to India.
Jane hears Rochester's voice calling her name across the moors and resolves to return to him.

"It was a grand boon doubtless; and independence would be glorious"

"If I join St John, I abandon half myself: if I go to India, I go to premature death."

Exam Tip

Compare St John's proposal with Rochester's to explore how Bronte constructs the theme of independence. St John represents duty without love; Rochester offered love without legality. Jane needs both.

Chapter 38: The Ending: "Reader, I married him"

Jane arrives at Thornfield to find it a blackened ruin, destroyed by a fire set by Bertha Mason.
She learns that Bertha died in the fire and that Rochester, having got the servants out and gone back for Bertha, lost his sight and one hand when the house fell in as he came down the great staircase.

They marry as equals; Jane has her inheritance and Rochester respects her independence.
Rochester eventually recovers partial sight in one eye; they have a son.
